Exploring the Effects of Periodontal (Gum) Disease on Oral Health
If you are experiencing very red or bleeding gums, tooth loss, or bad breath, you may be showing classic symptoms of periodontal (gum) disease. This condition is strongly associated with heart disease and stroke. Dr. Lee and his hygienist at our office will provide a customized diagnosis and treatment plan, as gum disease can vary in severity from person to person.
Gum disease is often silent and can go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred to the gums and bones. If you suspect you may have gum disease, it is important to seek periodontic gum therapy without delay.
Seeking treatment for gum disease
- Gums that are swollen or puffy
- Gum tissue that is red or purple
- Gums that are tender
- Gums that bleed easily
- Bad breath
- Gum tissue that is receding
Options for Treating Gum Disease
There are two types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is identified by tender, bleeding gums and can often be treated with more frequent dental hygiene appointments at our office. We may also suggest using medicated mouthwash to improve your at-home oral care routine and prevent further gum infection.
Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease, characterized by chronic bad breath, loose teeth, pus between teeth, and a persistent unpleasant taste. Our dentists provide scaling and root planing or laser gum therapy to effectively treat periodontitis. These treatments work to eliminate bacteria and plaque from below the gum line, ensuring the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
