Exploring the Effects of Periodontal (Gum) Disease on Oral Health
If you notice very red or bleeding gums, tooth loss, or bad breath, you may be experiencing symptoms of periodontal (gum) disease. This condition is closely linked to heart disease and stroke. Dr. Lee and his hygienist at our office will provide personalized diagnosis and treatment for gum disease, as it can vary from person to person.
Gum disease is often silent and can go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. If you suspect you have gum disease, it is important to seek periodontic gum therapy without delay.
Candidacy for Gum Disease Treatment
- Swollen or puffy gums
- Red or purple gum tissue
- Tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily
- Bad breath
- Receding gum tissue
Options for Treating Gum Disease
There are two types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is identified by tender, bleeding gums and can often be treated with more frequent dental hygiene appointments at our office. We may also suggest using medicated mouthwash to improve your at-home oral care routine and prevent further gum infection.
Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease, characterized by chronic bad breath, loose teeth, pus between teeth, and a persistent unpleasant taste. Our dentists provide scaling and root planing or laser gum therapy to address periodontitis. These treatments effectively remove bacteria and plaque from below the gum line, ensuring the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
